A whole array of new Facebook updates have been released between late last year and now. Here is what you need to know to optimise your business’ Facebook strategy:
1. Posting trends for 2017
The latest research in Facebook engagement has provided useful insights into the best posting practices for businesses to utilise.
BuzzSumo's research offered some of the following tips:
Be brief - Posts containing less than 50 characters were found to be the most engaging.
Post off-peak - Posts shared when the News Feed is less busy receive more engagement, on average.
Use video - Video posts (live or recorded) receive more shares than all other post types.
Ask questions - Questions got more likes than all other post types.
2. Optimize your cover photo for desktop and mobile
Facebook displays page cover photos at 820 x 312 pixels on desktop, and 640 x 360 pixels on smartphones. Simply meaning that cover photos may appear differently on desktop and mobile.
It is beneficial to ensure that any important text or imagery on your cover photo is clearly visible on mobile. To avoid obscured and cropped images simply create an invisible buffer of 134 pixels either side and feature important text and logos in the middle.
3. Change your profile photo to a video
All profiles and some Pages can now record or upload a video of up to seven seconds to use as a profile video.* This profile video loops continuously to replace static profile photos.
*You can currently only add a profile video from iPhone or Android.
4. Add captions to video ads automatically
Research shows that people prefer having the choice to opt in to sound on videos when using social media on mobile. Facebook's own researchers found that an overwhelming 80% of people react negatively towards advertisers when mobile video ads unexpectedly play loudly.
In order to cross the mute barrier, Facebook can now automatically generate close captions in video ads.*
* Automated captions are currently only available through Power Editor.
5. Broadcast live video from your desktop
The most recent Facebook Live update introduces multiple improvements that give users more control and flexibility over live broadcasts.
Broadcasting from a web browser - In addition to mobile live streaming, you can now go live on Facebook straight from the web on your desktop computer through a webcam.
Live contributors for Pages - A new Live Contributor role is now available which enables admins to give specific individuals the ability to broadcast live.
Enhanced video metrics - Profiles with at least 5,000 followers will receive enhanced insights on their live videos. These insights include metrics on total minutes viewed, total number of viewers, total engagement, and aggregated insights for videos over 7, 30, and 60 day periods.
